Ever the proverbial plant collector, David had too many favorites for the Staff’s favorite page, so we had to give him his own page. Here’s David’s favorite everythings…..

Favorite Trees for Early Spring:

Oriental Spruce - nice, dark, green needles
Concolor Fir - good, blue-green needles
Mountain Hemlock - nice form; much like the Alpine fir, but of a blue-green color.
Blue Atlas Cedar - nice architectural form.
Umbrella Pine - Small, evergreen tree with glossy, green needles.
Cornus contraversa - Great form, spreading, horizontal branches.
Cornus alternifolia - Smaller form of contraversa; variegated forms of both are great! Branches are reddish-brown.
Stewartia pseudocamillia - Great exfoliating bark in greens, grays and browns.
Stewartia monadelpha - Same exfoliating bark, but in cinnamon browns.
Paperbark Maple - Peeling, cinnamon, red bark.
Katsura tree - New growth comes out purple, fading to blue green.

Favorite Shrubs:

Witch hazel - February bloomer in yellow, oranges and reds.

Rhodies-

Crater’s Edge - early pink bloomer- is a deciduous Rhodie.
Cornell Pink - another deciduous pink Rhodie, just larger
PJM - small leaf, lots of small, lavender purple flowers

Pieris-

Mountain Fire/Forrest Flame - white flowers in March followed by red, new growth.
Valley Valentine - red flowers in March
Cavatine/Prelude - dwarf plant, white flowers in April
Little Green Heath - extra dwarf with white flowers
Little Heath Variagated - same with green and white leaves.

Daphne-

February Daphne - early February blooms. Fragrant, lavender/pink flowers.
Carol Mackie - variegated leaves. Fragrant white flowers in late April.
Briggs Moonlight -Reverse variegation of Carol Mackie.
Rock Daphne - low growing, great rock garden plant for shade.

Favorite Perennials:

Helleborus:

Royal Heritage Strain - white to deep purple flowers in Feb-May
Ivory Prince - green, white, flowers in March-May
Double Blooming Varieties - all the colors, just twice the petals.
Mardi Gras Strain - I have two; an apricot and a deep purple.
Red Lady - red flowers a little later than Heritage strain.

Primrose:

Wanda - very hardy! Great early color and reliable.
Drumstick - white, pink, lavender/purple flowers March/April.
Doubles - nice double flowers with great markings.

Hardy Cyclamen - nice foliage with rich pink flowers to near, white blooms in February- March. Some varieties bloom in September-October.
