STAFF FAVORITES:
The following list of plant selections are some of the favorites of those of us who deal with them day in and day out. Although the list if very subjective and individual as the plant nuts who selected them, they also reflect good qualities to look for in a plant that will serve you well for years and years to come.

Favorite Tree:
Tim: Cherokee Brave Dogwood- Beautiful, deep pink to red bloom in spring with great fall color as well.
Nanci: Magnolia- So Many Cultivars! Great Bloom colors and exceptionally hardy
Michael: Blieriana Plum-Large double pink spring leaves with intoxicating fragrance on a tree that makes a perfect scaffold for summer blooming clematis.
Jean: Styrax japonicus. Japanese Snowbell. Delicate fragrant flowers on a small well-shaped tree .
David: David’s list was too long for this page so we’re giving him his own link to elaborate and why he loves all the trees we sell. Click here to see his list of favorite everythings…..
Phyllis: Malus ‘Red Jade’. This weeping crab apple has 4 seasons of interest; blossoms in spring, good foliage in summer and red berries thru fall and winter. Snow looks great on the architectural branches in winter.

Favorite Shrub:
Tim: Evergreen- Picea ‘Pumilla’. Great compact habit.
Deciduous- Smoke bush- Good foliage and summer flowers.
Nanci: Variegated weigelia- I love this plant in the shade! The foliage brightens medium shade areas.
Michael: Witch hazel! What else flowers in January and February besides snowdrops?
Jean: Evergreen shrub: Leucothoe fontanesiana ‘ Girard's Rainbow ’ Colorful alternative to laurel or box in shade. Great against rhody foliage out of bloom. Deciduous shrub: Roses. No explanation needed!
Phyllis: Evergreen: Chamaecyparis (False Cypress). So many sizes, colors and shapes, so little space. Deciduous: Roses. I love all 257 varieties that grow in my own garden. What can I say? A rose… is a rose...is a rose- Gertrude Stein.

Favorite Perennial:
Tim: Stella d’Ora daylily. Continual summer color- foliage is a nice contrast in the garden.
Nanci: Campanula lactiflora. WOW! What a plant! With a little fertilizer this plant can reach 6’ tall and 3 ½ ‘ across!
Michael: ‘Jack Frost’ Brunnera. The combination of sky-blue spring flowers with silver foliage is unmatched.
Jean: Oriental lilies. Fragrance, beauty, versatility .
Phyllis: Peonies. Again, I have so many different varieties; I can’t possibly choose which is my favorite. These fine beauties are indestructible with wonderful fragrance and foliage. I have 2 that were from my Grandmother’s garden that are especially dear to me, but I love them all and since they live to be 150 to 200 years old, they’ll be around long after I’m gone.

Favorite Annual:
Tim: Petunias. Best value for the price! Supertunias and Wave varieties especially.
Nanci: Firecracker Fuchsia. Upright, bushy, variegated foliage. Great color!
Michael: Nicotiana. The tall, old fashioned, evening scented varieties make summer nights special.
Jean: Fushias. Variety of flower forms and colors. Reliable blooms for shade.
Phyllis: Ipomoea (Morning Glory vine). I could not believe how this huge plant leaped out of a small 4” pot last year to trellis up my 5’ tuteur! It covered itself each day in beautiful blue flowers with white eyes. Fantastic!

Favorite Tropical or Houseplant:
Tim: Hibiscus. True, ever blooming, tropical for patios or inside the home.
Nanci: Rojo Philodendron. Awesome, red foliage with a dark reverse.
Michael: Jasmines. It’s a fragrance thing, I guess.
Jean: Marantas, Calatheas, Hoyas, African Violets, Ferns, Jasmine, Sausevieria, anything fragrant in bloom.
Phyllis: My Meyer’s Lemon tree. Although it doesn’t produce enough fruit for the whole year, I love the fragrance of the numerous blossoms in winter. A bit of maintenance, but well worth it!
